George Orwell wrote his dystopia in 1948, which is set in the future 36 years later. At the time of the 2020 premier of the play, we were exactly 36 years after the fictive time of the novel. Times have changed greatly since ’48 and since ’84 too. From the perspective of the present, we approach this work that is still relevant to this day.

’In the face of pain there are no heroes.’ (quote from the novel)
Will we ever find a way out of the filter bubble that surrounds us? Or are we just imagining things about the outside world, hence we find it horrific? And while we fight this horrific world, are we turning horrific ourselves? From the perspective of Winston Smith we see Big Brother possessing absolute power, the Inner Party keeping an all-encompassing surveillance, and the Two Minutes Hate turning aggression into mass worship. Is the world really like this, or is it just how a lonely, middle-aged man, Winston Smith is observing it?  To what extent is it changed by the forbidden love affair with a young lady, Julia, and the developing mental connection with the mysterious O’Brien?Written by Csaba Mikó based on the novel  1984 by GEORGE ORWELL

Approved by Bill Hamilton, the caretaker of the literary legacy of the late Sanua Brownell Orwell, based on the novel George Orwell „NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR” (Copyright, 1949). The play in Hungary is being shown via the THEATRUM MUNDI Theatre and Literature Agency. www.theatrum-mundi.hu

Formed in New York in 1986, The Klezmatics revolutionised klezmer, the Yiddish instrumental dance music style rooted in Eastern Europe. Now celebrating its fortieth anniversary, the ensemble was one of the first and biggest stars of the genre at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, around the time when world music was gaining ground as a separate musical category. To this day, the band remains one of the best-known groups on the klezmer scene.

Recirquel’s new production, Paradisum explores the myth of rebirth following the silence of a destroyed world, where the means of communication is the body, and the only common language is movement. The creatures of this idyllic existence unfold from the ever-changing, swirling natural forces of the ‘fabric of life’ that pulsates around them, so they can reach the anima mundi, the world soul, through scenes of purification, birth, awakening and ritual.

Founded in 1999, the Liszt Prize-winning, Debrecen based Talamba has been one of Hungary’s leading percussion ensembles for 27 years - and as the title of their new programme - making its debut at Müpa - suggests, they keep moving forward, and their rhythm continues unabated.
