A darab 1885-ben, a Theater an der Wienben aratott először sikert, amikor a zeneszerző Ignaz Schnitzer librettójára komponálta meg nagyszabású operettjét Jókai Mór Szaffi című elbeszélése nyomán. A történet kincsek és kalandok világába vezeti a közönséget, ahol szenvedély, romantika és fordulatok váltják egymást, mindezt a cigányzene tüzes ritmusa, a csárdás elevensége és a keringő varázslatos dallamai szövik át.
