A színpadi változat őrzi a film szerkezetét, alapvető szituációit, szállóigévé vált mondatait, színházi rendbe szerkeszti az 1949-es év történetét, a valóságos történelmi szereplők „alteregóit” jeleníti meg. Ugyanazok és mégis mások. Nemcsak nevük más, néhány külső vagy épp belső tulajdonsággal gazdagabbak és szegényebbek az eredetieknél. A félig kimondott gondolat, a sorok között olvasás önirónikus művészi eszközével él Bacsó és Hamvai is. Mi pedig cinkosan továbbgondolva azonnal tudjuk hol vagyunk, mit hallunk, kikkel állunk szemben.
A magyar történelem örökérvényű parabolája, mosolyogtatóan torz tükörképe ez a mű. A színpadi tér az Angol Parkból Vidámparkká váló metaforikus helyszín, melyben megállíthatatlanul halad a „szocialista szellem vasútja”.
