Hans Castorp különös, felfokozott testi-szellemi kalandokon megy keresztül, melyek során ha pillanatokra is, de a halálból és a paráznaságból a szeretet álma dereng föl sejtelmesen. Hans Castorp azonban kénytelen elhagyni a „varázshegyet", mert meghívót kap a halál világraszóló ünnepére, az I. világháború félelmetes táncmulatságára, e lázas, gonosz tűzvészre, melyből ki tudja, hogy feltámad-e egykor a szeretet.
