Egy férjes asszony sorsa rajzolódik ki a műből, aki a teljes élet után vágyakozik. Az akkori kor hazug életét űző társaságban ő az egyedüli, aki nem tud hazugságban élni. Igaz és teljes életre vágyik ezért lázad fel a hazug konvenciók ellen. Annának Vronszkij jelenti a világot, ő azonban szabadulni próbál tőle, bár szereti Annát, de egyre gyakrabban hagyja magára. Annának egyetlen kiútja maradt: az öngyilkosság.
