There are realms where poetry and song are inextricably intertwined. This joint production by the ensemble known as Kaláka and the actor Zsolt Bogdán pays tribute to the remarkable poetic world of Sándor Kányádi.
Attendind a performance of Messiah is always a thrilling experience, but it is especially so when Handel’s work – which has become a national classic in England – is performed by a dedicated ensemble like the legendary German flagship of the international early-music scene: the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, now with over 44 years of history behind it. The storied chamber orchestra will perform with one of the world’s finest mixed choirs, the RIAS Kammerchor, which also hails from Berlin and was founded in the years immediately following the Second World War.
Two of today’s leading dramatic tenors — Michael Fabiano and Brian Jagde — take on the tour-de-force title role of what many considerthe ultimate Italian opera, Verdi’s monumental Shakespearean tragedy. Beloved sopranos Angel Blue and Ailyn Pérez make their company role debuts as the long-suffering Desdemona, alongside baritones Artur Ruciński as the sinister Iago. Michele Mariotti leads the full forces of the Met Orchestra and Chorus in the exhilarating score.
