A történet, ami a 19. század egyik tipikus kalandregényének indult, méltán válhatott a kapitalizmus, a pénz világának szimbolikus művévé. Tímár Mihály, a legyőzhetetlennek hitt hős története, aki a hirtelen jött gazdagság, a mesés kincsre lelés dacára sem boldog. Mert nincs meg a mindennél fontosabb: az igaz szeretet. A boldogság még is eljön, hogy válaszút elé állítsa a hőst: megválik-e a vagyontól, társadalmi rangtól valamiért, ami kézzel nem fogható, talán csak egy illúzió. Tímár Mihály története kritika: a lélek éhezésének tiltakozása az anyagi világ ellenében.
