Mint minden évben, idén is elegáns estély készül a családi kastélyban: a vendégek ruhája a legfinomabb anyagból készült, a menü minden igényt kielégít, de a személyzet is osztályon felüli. A nagyvonalúság és vendégszeretet régi hagyomány a Hansen-családban. Helge és hűséges felesége, Else három gyermeküket is hazavárják az ünnepségre: Helene-t, a különc, de melegszívű antropológust, a nagyszájú, faragatlan Michaelt és a gyerekek közül legsikeresebb, ma mégis csöndes, visszahúzódó Christiant. Ugyan van némi bizonytalanság a szobabeosztás körül, az estély mégis remek hangulatban kezdődik. Egyelőre csupán az a kérdés okoz problémát, hogy az első fogás vajon lazac, vagy rákleves. Aztán, a vacsora közepén az egyik gyerek szólásra emelkedik...
