1930-as évek, Berlin. A város izgalmas, szabad, a mulatókban repkednek a harisnyatartók, a táncos lányok szexisek és olcsón kapható gyönyörökkel csábítanak mindenkit, aki ebbe a világba téved.
Ide érkezik Amerikából Cliff, a lelkes de még kezdő író, hogy megírja élete nagy regényét. E helyett azonban, már az első nap beleszeret egy angol énekesnőbe (Sally), aki a politikához nem ért, de annál többet gondol a férfiakról és magáról. S ha már első éjszaka egymás karjaiban kötnek ki, Schneider kisasszony panziójában elkezdik közös életüket, abban a korban, amikor már annyira nem lehet hinni semmiben, hogy szinte mindent elhisznek amire csak vágynak.
A nagy kérdés: ellen tud-e állni a szerelem a hatalom, a pénz, a politika befolyásának? Megmaradhat-e a tisztesség a nehéz időkben?
