Bizet’s masterpiece has been the top draw at the world’s opera houses for nearly 150 years now. And no wonder: the dangerously alluring and unrestrained Gypsy woman at its heart is one of the most thrilling and erotic female characters ever to grace an opera stage. With lyrical passages like the famous Habanera that go straight to the heart and raucous crowd scenes like the Torreador Song, this opera is a passionate love story that unfolds with astonishing realism – and tragedy.

In this contemporary production by Pál Oberfrank Carmen will appeare in an arena of mirrors crafted by Kossuth Prize-winning set designer László Székely.

Our offer

The Innermost Room (or tisztaszoba, literally, ‘clean room’) is an ornately furnished room in provincial homes, which is kept clean at all times and is reserved primarily for the reception of valued guests. In the Székesfehérvár Ballet Theatre’s dance theatrical production, this room with a special status in the house is a metaphor or symbol, denoting a ‘place’ where we keep the treasured secrets of our soul.

The release of the volume A bilincs a szabadság legyen (‘Let the Shackles Be the Freedom’), a collection of the correspondence between Miklós Mészöly and Alaine Polcz, generated a significant level of interest in the writers’ private lives and literary work that, it is no exaggeration to say, continues to this day. Apart from the strong emotional bonds shared by several literary couples we could mention, it is perhaps the letters of these two authors that reveals the most thought-provoking ideas.
