Carl Orff a lírikus költészet egyik legjelentősebb ókori alakjának, Catullusnak verseire építette művét. Catullus szenvedélyes, nem ritkán pajzán verseket írt a férfi-női kapcsolatról, szerelemről, testi vágyakról, lelki hevületről. A Catulli Carmina lendületes, játékos zenei nyelvet használ az olykor sikamlós téma megjelenítésére. A táncjáték pedig vicces, mi több, pikáns, frivol stílusban avat be a két nem közti vonzalom rejtelmeibe. Bohózat a megtermékenyülés rítusáról.

There can hardly be imagined in our time a work that conveys a more important message to humanity, as it debates the possible fate of the earth, about threats to the natural environment than Götterdämmerung does. Perhaps there is still time for us to return the ring to the Rhinemaidens.
