A csíksomlyói ferencrendi kolostor szerzetesei a 18. század második felében összegyűjtötték és lemásolták azokat a nagypénteki misztériumjátékokat, amelyeket iskolájuk diákjai a környék népének bemutattak. Ezek a művek a régi magyar drámai emlékek fontos részét képezik, de nagy részük elveszett. A fennmaradt darabokból nemcsak a középkori misztériumjátékok, allegóriák, moralitások és példázatok ismerhetők fel, hanem rengeteg ismerős szereplő is: a kocsmába igyekvő bélpoklos, a hetvenkedő Szent Péter, Krisztus, Pilátus vagy éppen az ördögök. Vaskos, költői alakok. A Balogh-Kerényi-féle változat életre kelti ezeket a szereplőket, maivá teszi őket. E nagypénteki misztériumok tulajdonképpen népszínműként is felfoghatóak. Az elődeink művéből kölcsönzött, eredetiségükben megtartott vagy megváltoztatott elemek új művet eredményeztek. A cél az egységes játékkeret kialakítása volt, Jézus Krisztus kínszenvedésének újramesélése. A passiójáték eredendően zenés műfaj, a magyar hagyományokból jól ismerhető.

In this new stage version, the story emerges from a giant laptop, from which the two-dimensional and living characters of the tale come to life to bring the world of Johnny Corncob and Iluska into being through spoken word and song.
