Hegel elhagyja a kreuzbergi karantént, hogy Berlinbe utazzon. A Spree-parti főváros még poroszos arcát mutatja, nehéz államapparátussal és éber cenzori hivatallal. Hegel a halál árnyékában döbben rá, hogy életében hányszor vétett saját géniusza ellen és hogy hányszor szorította szellemét korlátok közé önként, politikai megfelelésből.
