Mrs. Dolly Levi férjszerzési praktikái állnak a "zenés vígjáték" középpontjában. Dolly mindent – sőt, még annál is többet – megtesz, hogy becserkéssze a gazdag Horace Vandergeldert. Sajátja mellett Dolly mások szerelmi életét is szívén viseli. A gyönyörű, fiatalon özvegyen maradt Molloyt Vandergelder titkárával, Corneliusszal, ez utóbbi munkatársát, Tuckert pedig Molly segédjével próbálja összeboronálni – s nem utolsósorban még a harcművész Ambrose Kempernek is kerít valakit: Vandergelder unokahúgát, Ermengarde-t. Dolly és a fiatalok kalandokkal és leendő férjekkel teli útja során eljutunk New York-ba, ahol az egész társaság a város legelőkelőbb éttermébe, a Harmonia Gardensbe érkezik. Itt szólal meg a musicalirodalom egyik legismertebb dala, a Hello, Dolly!

To this day, the band remains one of the best-known groups on the klezmer scene.
