1931 szilveszter éjjelén érkezik Berlinbe a fiatal amerikai írójelölt, Cliff Bradshaw, aki még aznap éjszaka a város egyik leglátogatottabb mulatójában találja magát, a legizgalmasabb énekesnő, az angol Sally Bowles karjaiban. Elsöprő és szenvedélyes szerelmükben nem látják a jövőt: nem veszik észre, hogy idegenekké lettek Németországban.
