Gallery Concert – Film Music on the Organ - Ágoston Gedai

Playing the organ is really only for fanatics, says Ágoston Gedai, who has served as music director of the Saint Vincent de Paul Church in Budapest for almost a decade and is also active as a music teacher. His aim at this concert is to demonstrate how well Puccini and Wagner, as well as Miklós Rózsa, Ennio Morricone and The Lord of the Rings, can all fit together into a single programme.

Film music on an organ? Why not? But how will it sound? More exciting than one might imagine, after the canopy above our heads is lowered to provide the audience in the gallery with an unparalleled acoustic experience. Now, the organ will literally be placed in a new light as we find out how it is not only classical organ music that sounds so pleasant on the instrument, because familiar film music does too.

It’s not easy to navigate the world of country music with Old World ears. Even defining it is no straightforward task, after all, how do Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Nick Cave and Taylor Swift all fit together?

Michael Mayo’s family legacy and natural talent paved the way for him to blossom as an artist and eventually achieve global fame. As the third vocalist to graduate from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, he has worked alongside the institute’s founder, Herbie Hancock, as well as with Kneebody, Christian Sands and Gretchen Parlato.

It did not take long for a chance meeting between Krisztina Tóth, a highly popular, multi-volume poet and writer living in London, and Nikoletta Szőke, a vocalist who has spread her wings on the Hungarian jazz scene in recent years, to lead to a fruitful collaboration. Their uncompromising artistic approaches inspired a unique, remarkably exciting and singular experiment rooted in the dialogue between poetry and song.
