A regény abszolút főszereplője Nero, a költészet iránt érdeklődő ifjú, aki egyik pillanatról a másikra Róma császárává válik. Költőnek középszerű, de mivel mérhetetlen hatalom hullik az ölébe, senki sem meri őt érdemben szembesíteni saját tehetségtelenségével.
