Bertolt Brecht és Kurt Weill Koldusoperája a zenés színház egyik remekműve. Egyszerre opera, musical és operett, valamint mindezek paródiája. Bár a darab a 20. századi színházi avantgárd része volt, mára már klasszikus rangra emelkedett, hiszen olyan, azóta számtalanszor feldolgozott „slágerek” hangzanak el benne, mint a Cápa-dal, az Ágyú-dal vagy a Salamon-dal.
A londoni Soho legmélyén – koldusok, kurvák és bűnözők világában – Bicska Maxi, a sármos rablógyilkos titokban feleségül veszi Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum, a koldushálózatot működtető üzletember egyetlen leányát. A viktoriánus Anglia szolgáltatja a történelmi hátteret a meséhez, melyben a koldusok királya bosszút áll a bandavezéren lánya elcsábításáért.

To this day, the band remains one of the best-known groups on the klezmer scene.
