Shakespeare egy ősi kelta monda nyomán – a széthulló család, a gyermeki hálátlanság történetén túl – gonosz és jó végletes, kozmikus harcát tárta elénk megmutatva, hogy milyen az ember, ha szembesülni kényszerül önmagával és tettei következményeivel.
