A Lorenzaccio a 16. századi Firenzébe visz bennünket, a Mediciek korába. Lorenzo Medici csendes, magába forduló, tudós fiatalember. Aztán váratlanul Firenze kicsapongó, gonosz fejedelméhez, Alessandro Medicihez szegődik. Társa, rossz szelleme, kegyence lesz. Azért veszi magára a züllött, gyáva élvhajhász álarcát hogy megölje a zsarnokot. És már ha akarná, se tudná letépni magáról az álarcot. Egyéni drámája, hogy tud erről. Gyűlöli az embereket. Úgy véli megismerte őket. Próbának is szánja a gyilkosságot. Tudnak-e élni a váratlan szabadsággal? És jól gondolja. Nem tudnak. Nem boldog az igazától. Csúnyán, kiábrándultan, méltatlan módon hal meg. Meglincselik. És a zavaros helyzetet azok használják ki, akiket nem eszmények, hanem érdekek vezetnek. Firenze egy tehetségtelen bábot választ új fejedelmének.
