A fiatal Edmond Dantest a menyegzőjéről viszik el a rendőrök egy feljelentés alapján. If várának börtönébe kerül, ahonnan nincs visszatérés. A vád: kapcsolat az akkor száműzött Napóleonnal. A vád hazugságra épül, de Dantes már nem tudja bizonyítani igazát. Hosszú éveket tölt börtönben, amikor egy ismeretlen börtöntárs halála révén megszökhet – és egyben birtokosa egy csodálatos vagyonnak is. Elindul tehát, mint Monte Cristo grófja, hogy bosszút álljon megnyomorítóin. A párizsi elit azokból áll, akik őt annak idején bebörtönöztették. Köztük valamikori menyasszonya, és annak fia. A gazdag gróf nem válogat az eszközökben – de vajon meddig tud elmenni bosszúvágyában? Mikor jön el az idő, amikor már érzelmei megakadályozzák a teljes leszámolást?
Szerelem, intrika, bosszú, szenvedély – minden együtt a színpadi műben, ahogy Dumas örökérvényű regényében is. Szomor György dalaival igazi musicalként mutatkozik meg a klasszikus alkotás.
