Brindsley Miller, a fiatal szobrász és kedvese Carol kölcsönvesz a szomszéd Haroldtól – annak engedélye nélkül – néhány értékes, antik bútort, hogy jó benyomást tegyenek a művész munkái iránt érdeklődő milliomos műgyűjtőre és Carol apjára, Melkett ezredesre. Harold azonban váratlanul betoppan – csakúgy, mint Brindsley volt szeretője, Clea. És a sötétben elszabadulnak az indulatok.
