August Strindberg a XIX. század második felében élt svéd író, aki viharos élete során sokat utazott, főleg irodalmi műveket írt, de fotós, festő, kémikus is próbált lenni. Többször megnősült, de házasságai rendre tönkrementek: mindannyiszor beleszeretett egy eszményképbe, amit a nőről kialakított, aztán ez a kép hamar szertefoszlott.
A Haláltánc című drámája a házasságon belül kialakult pokol szemléletes és hátborzongató leírása. Ez a darab ihlette meg a kortárs drámaírót, a svájci Dürrenmattot, aki szinte kizárólag Strindberg mondataiból építkezve kesernyés, ironikus, de mindvégig rendkívül szórakoztató színpadi játékot szerkesztett Play Strindberg! (Játsszunk Strindberget! címmel).
Dürrenmatt műve egy házasság tragédiájának komédiája a kicsinyes érdekek és a megmagyarázhatatlan és feloldhatatlan összetartozás ambivalenciájának megmutatásával.
