„Let Opera Belong to Everyone!”

Since 2001 Bartók Plus has become a major opera muster in the European Union and most specifically in Central Eastern Europe; the one and only opera festival in Hungary, and with its most comprehensive presentation of Bartók’s oeuvre, the world’s pre-eminent Bartók festival. This year the Festival invites opera lovers to join this Feast of the Opera with 7 opening night performances, 9 companies performing and 4 guest companies visiting from abroad.

What does “Plus” refer to in the new, more straightforward name of the festival Bartók Plus? Our mission, in short.

It refers to opera life after Bartók. It refers to the fact that the future of the opera genre lies with the birth of new popular opera capable of addressing broad audiences, on the one hand, and with performances making opera accessible to the widest possible public, on the other.
With this mission in mind, we are organizing the finals of “Key to the Future”, the first opera composition competition in the hope of bringing to light new popular operas addressing just everyone. The audience is also counted on in choosing the hit opera of the future from among the works competing for the public’s appraisal.

We endeavour to get more and more people to consider the days of the Bartók Plus Festival a personal feat. Last year’s resounding success, the free performance of Tosca at the Avas Lookout Tower, which became publicly known as our "Opera for Thousands" programme, with a reference to the size of the audience made obvious the necessity to continue this initiative. In the Verdi year we are producing the Most Popular Opera Composer’s most popular work: La Traviata in the streets of Miskolc, as a popular opera for the man in the street.

We strive to make everybody feel that this Opera Festival is their own, ant that we want everyone to take their share of it; either within the walls of the Miskolc theatre or in the open-air performances.

Let us celebrate together that Opera Belongs to Everyone.

Our offer

According to critics, the Serbian cellist Petar Pejčić possesses a “captivating gift for storytelling” (Le Soir). His career has soared since he first attracted attention as the youngest finalist of the 2022 Queen Elisabeth Competition, which he followed up with victory at the 2025 YCAT competition in London. He is currently studying with Frans Helmerson at the renowned Kronberg Academy.

Following the great success of their 2023 concert, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Müpa Budapest under the baton of their new music director, Martin Rajna. The thoughtfully assembled programme vividly demonstrates the manner in which this excellent ensemble is entering a new chapter in its history full of dynamism and optimism.

Two masterpieces of late 19th-century French sacred music make up the programme of this concert-hall celebration: Gabriel Fauré’s exquisitely beautiful Requiem and the Clovis Mass by the elderly Charles Gounod. Between the movements of the latter work, the audience will also become acquainted with four further gems from the Gallican tradition of church music, with one composition each by Alexandre Guilmant, Louis Aubert, Camille Saint-Saëns and Théodore Dubois.
