Üvegből készült kis állatfigurák ragyognak a fényben, átlátszóak, törékenyek, egy széttört szivárvány apró darabjai ők. Laurának egész gyűjteménye van belőlük, életét a velük való foglalatosság tölti be. Tom, Laura költőnek készülő öccse a harmincas éveket idézi fel emlékeiben, egy olyan amerikai kispolgári család életét, amelyik akarva-akaratlanul elszakad a realitás világától. Amanda, az anyja hősies erőfeszítéssel – és egy régvolt úri élet iránti nosztalgiával – igyekszik családját a felszínen tartani. Ez annál is inkább reménytelennek feltűnő vállalkozás, mert az apa évekkel ezelőtt megszökött hazulról, már csak egy fénykép a falon, s néhány recsegő gramofonlemez tanúskodik hajdani jelenlétéről.
Az anya legnagyobb gondja gyermekei sorsa: mi lesz Laurával, ezzel a régen eladósorba került, befelé élő lánnyal, akinek semmi hajlandósága az élet mindennapjaihoz igazodni.
