A vőlegény, ha tehetős, egy egész családot képes kiemelni a nincstelenségből – vélik Csuszikék, akik eladósorba került lányuk, Kornél és a jómódúnak vélt fogorvos, Fux Rudi házasságában látják egy jobb élet lehetőségét. A lány hiába szereti tiszta szívvel, önmagáért a férfit, a család szándéka hamar kiderül, a szép tervek meghiúsulnak és újabb pénzéhes hazugságok látnak napvilágot. Az első világháború előtti, pesti kispolgárok, ha nem is engedhettek meg maguknak nagyvonalú életet, kiválóan értettek ahhoz, hogyan keltsék rendezett anyagi körülmények látszatát. Erről, a szerző által jól ismert élethelyzetről, s annak hozadékairól szól az olykor mulatságosan fordulatos, szenvedélyesen fájdalmas, olykor elképesztően ismerős történet Szikszai Rémusz rendezésében.
