Of course, the various problems presented in the work were highly relevant in the 19th century, the age of Romanticism, a time when bourgeois society was at odds with many of the principles held sacrosanct in previous historical eras. This staging of the opera has long been a successful component of the Budapest Wagner Days festival. Taking on the principle roles before the Müpa Budapest audience will be such artists as Marco Jentzsch as Tannhäuser, Elisabet Strid as Elisabeth, Gábor Bretz as Hermann, Dorottya Láng as Venus, and Lauri Vasar as Wolfram von Eschenbach. Occupying the podium for this production is Michael Güttler, who regularly conducts Wagner works and is at home in Europe’s most prestigious opera houses.
